VOX Telehealth and StayWell Launch Alliance to Enhance Patient Engagement Through Best-in-Class Education and Technology

Customizable, multi-device patient engagement platform aims to improve care plan adherence, outcomes for knee or hip replacements

Dallas, TX, November 6, 2015 – Major joint replacement surgeries are among the fastest-growing medical procedures and drivers of significant cost disparities across the country. These factors, coupled with an aging demographic, make it increasingly important for patients to take an active role in their pre- and post-surgical care. Today, two leading companies known for best-in-class patient engagement solutions, VOX Telehealth and StayWell, announced an alliance to leverage VOX’s proprietary digital platform and StayWell’s health engagement capabilities to improve patient adherence to care plan protocols.

The VOX-StayWell collaboration will give surgeons, nurses, and other clinicians at hospitals access to the OrthoCare Program to support efforts to optimize care for patients undergoing major hip or knee replacement surgery. The OrthoCare Program is unique because it:

  • Engages patients with robust pre-op educational content and preparation tools;
  • Provides patient reminders and symptomatic observations all tied to a customizable alert escalation and notification system;
  • Can be delivered via multiple device platforms; and
  • Reflects best practice educational content and medical protocols designed to improve outcomes and reduce costs by decreasing post-discharge complications and readmissions.

The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has proposed dramatic changes for the orthopedic industry that will take effect in January 2016. Specifically, a new mandatory bundled payment program known as the Comprehensive Care for Joint Replacement (CCJR) model will be implemented. The program is intended to address the quality and coordination of care for joint replacement procedures.

“Given the dramatic increase in total joint replacements and the impending new bundled payment model, the orthopedic industry will benefit greatly from an improved patient engagement solution,” said David Brown, Founder & CEO of VOX Telehealth. “We are pleased to join forces with StayWell, a recognized leader in providing patients with meaningful educational content, as we aim to enhance and develop programs across the diagnostic spectrum that authentically and effectively empower patients to be active participants in their episode of care, while increasing patient satisfaction and quality of life.”

The OrthoCare Program has been effective at engaging patients and caregivers, and has directly improved metrics of significance to the orthopedic industry, including increased direct-to-home discharges, reduced length-of-stay, and improved overall patient experience. Given the introduction of the impending CCJR model, measures such as these have become particularly important for health care organizations.

In addition to focusing on orthopedics, VOX Telehealth and StayWell plan to pursue the development of engagement solutions designed for other specialties including spine procedures, cardiovascular surgeries, and bariatric procedures, among others.

“Patient engagement has shifted from a value-add to a must-have and is critical to the survival of any organization in today’s health care market place,” said David Gregg, M.D., Chief Medical Officer of StayWell. “Effective engagement is driven by providing patients, and caregivers, with a seamless process to effectively and efficiently access the right information, at the right time, and in the right format. We believe the enhanced OrthoCare Program will help health care providers achieve better quality and better patient outcomes in this critical area.”

The alliance between VOX Telehealth and StayWell was announced at The Annual Meeting of the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons (AAHKS) in Dallas, TX. Representatives from both organizations are available at Booth I, a VOX Telehealth exhibit.
